General rules and regulations of cemeteries regarding tombstones

Each metropolitan Municipality has their own set of rules and regulations regarding the procedures and erection of headstones. These by-laws need to be adhered to if you wish to have a burial in the graveyard, and erect a headstone on the grave. Some general rules and regulations regarding tombstone installations at cemeteries include:

  • Workmanship or quality: Tombstones that have inferior workmanship or quality may be prohibited, as this can have an effect on the overall atmosphere of the cemetery, and can even be hazardous to visitors. Tombstones should be approved by the South African Bureau of Standards with a life expectancy of at least 25 years. Tombco manufactures high quality granite tombstones that meet the highest quality standards. Our tombstones are durable, offering a 30 year guarantee.
  • Offensive or objectionable designs / lettering: Offensive or objectionable tombstones are prohibited. If you are considering an unusual design or shape, talk to the cemetery officer in charge, or get permission from the council before the tombstone is installed.
  • Tombstone installation: The erection and installation of a tombstone on a grave needs to be approved by the officer in charge, prior to installation. There are also a number of regulations regarding installation methods the installer needs to comply with.
  • Dimensions of the headstone: The base of the headstone needs to adhere to the cemetery's dimensions, and some cemeteries do not allow kerb demarcating and slab coverings in lawn sections of the cemetery.
